Hi, I am w:nl:gebruiker:Walter of the dutch Wikipedia. I am writing you because your are listed as ambassador of your wiki. I have something to say that I think you will find useful and possibly others of your wiki also.

You know it is not easy for the members of a local wiki to be informed about what is going on in the higher levels of the Wikimedia family. This because of the language problem and the high level of fragmentation of places where you can find information.

I am now making a weekly news letter (Wikizine) that attempts to provide the news of the Wikimedia projects. The concept is to list only a very short description of the news an give the relevant url to the subject. I want it to be short, only give the news that is important for all projects. The target audience include the ambassadors. It is for people who are interested in what it going on outside there own wiki. I emphasize on the news that is practical-technical. The information comes form several "news"-pages on several wikis, the mailinglists and IRC. There will be news I can not discover. If you have news found somewhere or from you own wiki please let my know. wikizine AT wikipedia.be

I can only create one version in something that supposed to be English. I count on the readers to inform there local wiki about the news in there own language.

Wikizine is send by use of the mailinglist Announce-l. It is only used for this. So people can subscribe without being swamped by emails like the lists.

Office Actions

Hello, I was wondering if someone here could help me, I'm a sysyop over on en.wiki. en:Sistem Odası was created on our project, in turkish, and was transwikied here, where it has since been deleted, Sistem Odası, apparantly as an office action, CSD criteria G9. Could someone please explain to me how your version of G9 works? For us it is only for things to be deleted by the foundation, If its the same here, could someone tell me what caused the office to delete it, as presumably we should delete it for the same reason. So, en:Aşk-ı Memnu (TV series) is the adaptation of en:Aşk-ı Memnu which seemed to be first published in en:Servet-i Fünun. I'm just leaving a note here that this post to the Administrator's Noticeboard might be of some interest to the editors of the Turkish Wikipedia. I would bring it up for discussion here on the Turkish Wikipedia, but I have absolutely no knowledge of Turkish. Could someone please start a discussion at the appropriate place here? We have started a discussion on the topic at the Village Pump [2]. The need for proper attribution is known (to some!), we do have the templates to document translation sources such as {{Kaynak viki}} and {{Kaynak wiki2}}. The use of the change summary to indicate the source of an article is also used by a few (for example [3]). The discussion that just started should help educate the tr-wiki community at large on the importance of attribution and the proper methods for doing it. Question. Is there made up how many kinds of Passage of national anthem of Türkiye? Maybe, from what I can gather, it is made up 2 Passage, is this true?

I have a second related question.

When I was in Istanbul -- 1987 -- Turks saw me and started speaking to me in German. Not English.

Many Turks have worked in Germany, or have family there.

So I based my Turkish book list on my German page, not on my English page.

Now, in 2011, which language is easier for the average Turk? German or English?

• Are you asking this as a general question or is it purely and simply within the perspective of Wikipedia? Also I presume you're referring to translation, in which case I write this response accordingly. I happen to speak English fluently because I'm from England, but from what I've experienced in Turkey most Turkish people are much more likely to have a command (to a certain extent) of English rather than German. Having said that, there are millions of Turkish people living in Germany, as you mentioned, and one would assume that most of these people must have at least some knowledge of German. Also there are many people in Turkey who have returned after having spent time in Germany and can thus speak the language - German speakers are dotted all over the country. However, the concentration of English speakers, namely including those who have learned English up to a particular level from school or university, is, I would say, much higher. When it comes to Wikipedia, the situation is pretty similar, but there are a lot of users here who can speak either language. Allow me to refer you to our group of volunteer translators. Scroll down a bit and on your left you will find a nice scrolly list full of users who have put themselves down as volunteers for particular languages; "Almanca" means "German" and "İngilizce" means "English". I'm a bit bogged down with responsibilities in real life at the moment, but I can speak German as well as English, so if worst comes to worst you can come and ask me . Hope I've been of help. I had translated my page into Turkish already.

I happened to see the Ambassadors list, and it implied far more use of English than I had experienced back in the 1980s.

I will now create my page.

I will include the English introduction, and I will include my German translation of the English as well, and anyone who wants to do the honours and translate into Turkish is then free to do so.

Generally, my introduction is only there for a couple of days before a bilingual user does a translation of it.

Foundation Images Policy

Hi everyone,
I am Yosri from Malay Wikipedia. Recently I was informed by certain parties that MS Wiki need to delete any images tagged as Non-Commercial under Foundation Licensing policy. After I have done some studies, I realised that Wikipedia Foundations is moving towards allowing commercialises all images, as such they are acting on behalf of commercial company to require all images loaded with tagging Non-Commercial in all Wiki Project to be removed, including those loaded in local Wiki. You are only allowed to licenses your images under "free content", which specifically allows commercial reuse, example GDLF 1.2. Certain images is exempted under a very narrow EDP ("exemption doctrine policy") definition. If you all already aware about this, please ignore this comment. Merhaba, I'm from Germany and I'm sorry that I can't speak Turkish. So I don't even know if i'm right here to ask about the page of the Oympia winner Gamze Bulut. She won the silver medal at Olympia 2012 and it would be great if there could be a picture showing her. It's obviously a great idea to contact her club. I'd be happy to draft a letter for you to send along with the contact details of her club. I just have to take a quick look at en:Wikipedia:Example requests for permission, and we'll be good to go :) I'll be a bit busy today, but expect something (and poke me if you see no progress) in the evening. I am also an OTRS agent, and I could handle the incoming letter of permission, and take care of the rest.

We usually use the Embassy for questions in foreign languages, but it doesn't really matter to be frank. This is the miscellanous section of our village pump, and we use this place for almost everything :) If you were a Turkish speaker, noone would find this strange. But just to be on the safe side, I shall move this discussion to the embassy tonight. My next reply will also be posted on that page.

By the way, the pronunciation of "Gamze Bulut" was wrong in your article, and I fixed it (both on en.wiki and de.wiki). Hope you don't mind :)

it.wiki in trouble, once again, this time is worse than last year

Hi, this is just to let you know that the dangerous law that wasn't issued last year, when we blacked-out the site, is once again under discussion at the Italian Senate. This time things seem to be much much worse than one year ago. The act is now harder and contains many more obligations, so many and so dangerous that no sysops would work at such conditions because it would definitely be too risky. Very few among our users would go on editing BLPs or "spicy" topics any more because it could be very costly: up to 100,000 euros! And any legalised troll saying that something in our articles disturbs him, would be entitled to request an addition (inside the article) which actually we are not going to accept because the troll is not required to be honest and tell the truth, any liar would be legally welcomed and we couldn't even comment... (I'm not kidding, it's incredible but true...)
Moreover, this time the approval could more probably be forced by the so-called technical government (headed by Mr. Monti), and all the bigger Italian parties toghether (Berlusconians hands in hands with former communists - both had separately tried to enforce such an act before) are working for strengthening the act. So, this time we need a critical help from anyone, we need it now because the scheduled vote on next Monday could be the last time we can freely work on it.wiki. We need it strong because main Italian media are simply ignoring our protest, and we can't read any news about it outside the web.
So, please, please, please, do whatever you can in order to avoid at least that this can happen in a complete silence. Inform your deputy, call the closest Italian embassy, spam your papers and/or our Senators (open individual files for addresses), use your fantasy and do whatever you think might be strongly helpful in protecting Wikipedia, starting from spreading the news across the WikiWorld.
Any little thing you can do will be vitally important for it.wiki.

I know that Ottoman Turkish incorporated a graet deal of Arabic and Persian vocabulary, and since I'm a native speaker of Persian, I transliterated the Persian and Arabic words but I couldn't do the Turkish part. Possible vandalism

"Merhaba" is one of the four Turkish words I know.

In the last few days, an ip from Germany vandalized in several Wikipedias, especially in the Spanish and the Italian one. Due to these actions the IP is blocked in WP:DE and WP:IT. The vandalism actions comprised the creation of REDIRECTs which were either nonsense or German vulgar terms. Most of the REDIRECTs have been deleted by now. I just discoverd that this IP created about 15 REDIRECTs in the Turkish Wikipedia, of which at least one is obviously nonsense (Türkenland). I just suggest that somebody checks all these REDIRECTs. Translation of the week/Translation candidates

Hello! Sometimes I comment on the meta page m:Translation of the week/Translation candidates and I've noticed that recently the number of candidates and votes has been relatively low. More importantly, there is some unbalance in the group of 5-7 editors that usually comment, with 2-3 it-N users, 1-2 es-N, 1 sv-N, 1 zh-N. Is there any users from different language editions who would like to join?

Suggesting articles to be translated may be considered just a game, but still it is a fun game once in a while and at least 2 to 4 language translations are added every week so it does have an impact on the global perception of a topic and it is worth that the selection represent the global language community.

For this reason, I though it would be nice to leave a reminder to some "minor" wikipedia to take a look...

WikiScienceCompetition 2017

Hi! Wiki Science Competition has started, yesterday a banner appeared on enwiki in USA making it officially "global", as far as I know. Sitenotices have appeared for sure in Spain, Austria, Russian Federation and Ukraine, and Italy will be join very soon with a massive national campaign.

As a member of the academic committee I did my best to reduce the gap between countries both in the composition of the juries and now in the outreach. I did inform many platforms (enwiki, eswiki, frwiki) during the preparation of the event, now I am informing all national institutions, associations and federations of science and technology I can contact, especially those located in countries without national juries (so, also in Turkey) and I am posting notes on LinkedIn groups everyday... and so on. That's why I am here.

We prepared banners for many countries but on meta they say it is not wise to use them all, so if you want to use the style and do one here on your wiki for few days, just inform us.

Otherwise, if you have social media and you want to inform your friends and colleagues, the twitter hashtags are #WSC2017, #WikiScience2017, #WikiScience

After 12 days this category is empty. A banner would really help to inform researchers in the area. All the other massive campaigns have not reached Turkey yet. maybe the banner-sitenotices in Greece or Bulgaria could lead to some influence, but the effect of neighboring country is limited and the Arab countries have not started yet. I have some residual hope of influence if the campaign starts massively in Germany with millions tr-N living there but I am not optimistic, I'd prefer something directly more targeted at Turkey. Wrong name article with little notability

Hello! I'm from Japanese Wikipedia. I was asked by English Wikipedia user to survey whether Marcos Tiago Bernard Rodriguez is a real peason, because this article in English was created by "Japan Football", the blocked user describing many false info. I find that he is a real person, but his full name is wrong (see en:User talk:ElfLady64#Marcos Tiago Bernard Rodriguez). His article in this language was also created by the same person. Proposed decision from Langcom on the Ottoman Turkish Wikipedia: Closure, unless a group of editors who are interested in the language materializes in a week

Hi, guys! Some of you may wonder about the status of the request to form an Ottoman Turkish Wikipedia. There is a proposed decision here: meta:Requests_for_new_languages/Wikipedia_Ottoman_Turkish_4#Proposed_decisions

The proposed decision is a rejection of the project as it is a historical non-native language (as "Court" Ottomah Turkish was a learned language of the elites, and today has no native speakers). Langcom is also fearful that such a Wiki would become a "content fork" of the Modern Turkish Wikipedia that would be politically biased.

There is however a way forward: "If new contributors come forward—and can demonstrate the existence of a body of people who will contribute, preferably from both within and outside Turkey—we would entertain a new request. However, a new request lacking evidence of this can and will be speedy-closed. And even if the new request is legitimate, we will encourage the contributors to create the project outside of Wikimedia."

I would also suggest that people make sure it is not a politically biased project.

My thoughts: On one hand I personally like the idea of a wiki created in a historical trade/elite language for academic purposes and find the concept interesting, but on the other hand it's important to be honest about the status of Ottoman Turkish (it is not, and had not, been the kind of language Langcom is looking for: natively spoken and current) and the likely contributor base (pretty much academics). If academics decide to make an Ottoman Turkish Wikipedia, as long as they take care to avoid political bias, I think that would be the best way to handle the matter.

P.S. if you do wish to move forward with this, please clean up what's in the incubator within a month, as there is an allegation that it was translated or transliterated from modern Turkish Wikipedia without attribution, which makes it a copyright violation.
